So, I’m going through edits. Drum roll… again. This time, I’ve decided I need a lot of positives surrounding me as I get this novel right—once and for all. And so I remain calm. ;)
Actually, I wanted to post some quotes, and invite fellow bloggers to post motivating quotes that keep them going, or make you feel good about your writing. And most of all, make me think before I write it!
This is short and sweet, since I should be editing right now…
“We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are” Anaïs Nin
"Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader—not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon." E.L. Doctorow
"Start early and work hard. A writer's apprenticeship usually involves writing a million words (which are then discarded) before he's almost ready to begin. That takes a while."
David Eddings
"No, it's not a very good story—its author was too busy listening to other voices to listen as closely as he should have to the one coming from inside." Stephen King
“When genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot.” DH Lawrence
“If a woman hasn't got a tiny streak of harlot in her, she's a dry stick as a rule” DH Lawrence

Uhm, this one's just for fun:
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it."
W.C. Fields
Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia. ~E.L. Doctorow
(That's what's wrong with me....)
I try to leave out the parts that people skip. ~Elmore Leonard
(But, I'm afraid then I have nothing left to say)
Substitute "damn" every time you're inclined to write "very;" your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. ~Mark Twain
(I love Twain's stuff)
I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions. ~James Michener
(This had such wonderful imagery, I had to put it in)
What no wife (husband/significant other) of a writer can ever understand is that a writer is working when he's staring out of the window. ~Burton Rascoe
(I've been telling my hubby this forever!)
No author dislikes to be edited as much as he dislikes not to be published. ~Russell Lynes

My favorite quote, but a reading one, not a writing one:
"A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read." - Mark Twain

Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young."

Great quotes everyone... I'm especially in love with the schizophrenia one. LOL
Hey m... good to see you over here!
Kelly... funny, a lot of authors have their version of the oscar wilde quote. There is great truth in it.
Just used this one on my blog: Being an author is like being in charge of your own personal insane asylum. ~Graycie Harmon
"We work in the dark. We do what we can. We give what we have.”- a character written by Henry James
Ignorance on fire is better than knowledge on ice~Chinese fortune cookie. And it was delicious.

Love your blog, Tiff! I'm collecting quotes when I'm not eating cookies.
Aren't quotes so much fun Maggie? I love the ones you have on your personal blog!
Good luck with your revisions Tiff! I can't wait to read it!
Tiff, I could spend the day posting quotations I love, but I will discipline myself and share only a few.
“No matter how good you are, nobody is going to come knocking at your door. You have to take the risk of rejection, and get that material out there. Assume, as much as possible, that it might get taken, not that it must be. Also, be aware that just because a piece is rejected, it does not necessarily mean that the idea or writing is bad…. Understand, too, that things get rejected for a lot of reasons. Your writing may be wonderful - it may be your timing, your subject, or an editor's quirks that get between you and a sale. Try to find your richest joy and satisfaction in the writing itself. Let the rest be gravy. Good gravy, but gravy.”
-- Elizabeth Berg
"And then learn to be more compassionate company, as if you were somebody you are fond of and wish to encourage. I doubt that you would read a close friend's early efforts and, in his or her presence, roll your eyes and snicker."
—Anne Lamott
“Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.”
—Anne Lamott
“ You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”
—Annie Dillard
*ROTF* I love the DH Lawrence one! That's awesome!
Spend a little time every day writing in some capacity. Don't wait until you have five free hours on the weekend. The longer you put off writing, the more daunting it seems. Write every day. It's easier to keep a patient on life support than it is to resurrect the dead.
~Janet Fitch
I love the Nora Roiberts one but I'm going to get it wrong... it goes something like... "I can't do anything with a blank page."
And of course one of my favorites is A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step--although it really doesn't pertain to writing, I do like the quote.
Ely...it applies to everything in life, including writing. An individual makes what they want of the words they read.
Here are a few of my favorites...
Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.
-Pablo Picasso
Nothing will work unless you do.
-Maya Angelou
This last quote just reminds me that I am worth taking the time to follow my dreams. This is from his inaugural address
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequet, it is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves-Who are we to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
-Nelson Mandela

I missed this Tuesday because my work computer went capoohie. Not sure how to spell that. So I'm chiming in now just to say I never look up quotes and I'm always amazed at what you guys post.
I did get a journal from some friends of mine that includes quotes of great female writers. I don't have it with me, but I know I need to post those things somewhere around my desk at home.
Good luck with your revisions and I have to say your perseverance alone is enough to motivate the rest of us. *G*
