I got my third cover. It's still 'in-progress' as in it needs the copy line and the quotes, but this beauty is the cover for THE SECRET DESIRES OF A GOVERNESS. Isn't it simply gorgeous?
Also, hop on over to my website for the rest of Chapter One (and find out how Elena's fate as a harem girl starts in THE SURRENDER OF A LADY)! All you need to do is click HERE!
I won't be blogging on the dark walk again till my release day. Please visit my website (on the weekend--it won't be updated till then) for my blog tour, which starts September 22nd with the wonderful ladies over on The Romance Dish then over to the Borders True Romance Blog on the 24th... And many more places and dates.
What makes an awesome cover for you? Will you pick up a book based on cover alone? Buy it on cover? Or on title? Do you read the first page? The back blurb, cover quotes? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Tiff, this is luscious! It always helps when there's a beautiful cover. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I am constantly amazed by some of the bad or boring covers out there.
A cover is the first thing that catches my eye, then it's the back blurb. I confess I don't pay any attention to the "famous author endorsements" (maybe because I don't have a Lisa Kleypas quote, LOL). Go Tiff!
Maggie, you are too funny! I always pay attention to covers and have bought based on cover LOL! Another thing I do (I admit, I'm not much for reading the first page) I go to page 69. If there's some good stuff going on that I want to know about, I buy the book.
I always pay attention to quotes. I've bought many a quote based on Julia Quinn's.
What a beautiful, rich cover! I have picked up a lot of books because the cover grabbed me -- this is one that I would pick up for sure!
Oh, which reminds me -- I received the cover flats and bookmarks you sent, and I forgot to let you know. Again, truly beautiful. :) Thank you.
I am not swayed so much by author quotes. BUT I've bought (and enjoyed) a book because an author that I like raved on Twitter about a book SHE was reading right then. :)
Donna, glad the coverflats made it to you. I rarely trust the post these days. It's always the things you don't want to get lost that get lost.
I have also picked up a book because an author or person I respect has raved about it!
I love the purple! Absolutely delicious.
I agree about the cover. It's the first thing that catches my eye. And I usually only notice who gives the quotes, not what they say. Not sure why.
Glad you got blessed by cover gods again. Your three are really lovely.
Thanks for stopping by, Marnee! I have indeed been blessed by the cover gods! I'm very, very thrilled with my editor's vision for the books (she gives the art department initial direction) and greatful for a most amazing art department at St. Martin's. I might be biased, but I think they make some of the loveliest covers out there.
Hey Tiff! Love the cover, it's so sumptuous and gorgeous! I have to say that I appreciate a good cover, sometimes it helps to set the initial tone of the book!
Congratulations! I'm so proud of all your authorial accomplishments! You rock!
Love it, love it, love it. You have truly been blessed by the cover gods. Yay!
And yeah I love gorgeous covers. I'm drawn more to people on covers than other stuff.
LISA!!!!! Good to see you over here! And thank you for the lovely compliments.
Ely, I hate when they have funny stuff on covers... like settings with things that look THROWN in... lol! and faded in the background, no my cuppa tea.
This is a beautiful cover! It definitely catches the eye. Congrats! Looking forward to your debut. :)
I read mostly historicals, so I look for the telltale swoopy font, clothing, title words. But a lot of covers do look alike. For me, quotes from an author I admire really help. I started reading Eloisa James because JQ raved about her so much -- it didn't take long for me to agree completely!
(On a related note -- SBTB is snarking on some old covers today: http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/index.php/weblog/comments/cover-snark-wayback-retro-edition/ Pretty funny, and definitely shows how tastes have quickly changed!)
Theresa,
I love when SBTB snark on some cover no-so-awesomeness! LOL
And funny... that is the exact reason I started reading EJ!
It's beautiful, Tiff!
I have totally bought based on cover. Lots of people hate the "headless" look but I love it. More space to show the pretty dresses :)
I also love the title, as you know. I want to know what that governess gets up to, lol.
Oh, Tiffany! That cover is simply gorgeous!! I adore the purples and especially the dress.
Cover Gods love ya, gal! ;)
I'm very much a cover lover. I'll pick up a book based on cover looks alone. It's definitely one way to snag my interest. The back blurb and usually a page or two will seal the deal. LOL My hubby says I'm a crow- draw to shiny things. (he means diamonds, but it works for books, too!)
Simone,
I love governess books! The title is thank you to Ely!
WOW!! Beautiful! I love this cover so much! I usually buy based on the cover and back of the book. I don't like to read the first pages until I am ready to read the whole thing--unless its a brand new author to me and I want a taste of their voice before buying.
Thanks, Sarah! Hmmm.... diamonds and books! LOL. Yeah, I'm totally attracted to shiny things!
J.K. Yeah, I've got to be in the mood to want to read the book then and there to read from the first page. That's probably why I pick page 69 :)
Gorgeous covers, Tiff. If I were a person who bought books according to covers, yours hits all the right marks. But I'm a first page reader. Actually I'm an opening line reader--if the opening line doesn't hook me, I sometimes set it down, which I know isn't fair. :)
Hellion,
What do you do if the opening line is so-so/okay, but not fantastic?
Tiff, that is one gorgeous cover! I think it's your most beautiful yet and that's saying a lot, considering your other covers.
I don't buy books based on the cover but, if I don't know the author, the book's cover will entice me to pick it up and take a closer look. I know I've said this before, but book covers are what caused me to discover Robyn Carr and Kristan Higgins.
If I haven't heard of the book or the author, I'll make my buying decision based on the back cover blurb. I don't start reading the story until I get home because once I start, I don't want to stop! :)
All of us at The Romance Dish are excited to be the first stop on your blog tour for The Surrender of a Lady. We'll see you on the 22nd!
Hi PJ!
I'm very happy to start my tour at the Romance Dish.
Glad you loved the cover. And yes, I've picked up new to me authors by the beautiful covers (Alexandra Hawkins comes to mind).
Tiff, if the opening line was so-so, but I'd had good word of mouth from people I trusted, I'd probably still buy it. If I didn't buy it, it was probably because I was penny pinching and really wanted to go home and watch a DVD I already had. :)
I think word of mouth trumps almost every other marketing device out there. Sorry, marketing! *LOL*
Hellion, I agree! Word of mouth is huge! You like to read what your friends are reading because then you can discuss books!
